movies and such

First! I thought this was an excellent question. I stole this from [personal profile] jou!

If you happened to have a theatre all to yourself, and you could choose any one film to watch, any movie ever, which one would you choose?

For me, even given all the classics watching lately, I can't even pretend I'd be likely to choose anything else... The Goonies!

Last week the running buddy and I watched Hogfather, which was mostly enjoyable for seeing Death, Death of Rats, Ridcully, Susan, and other such characters come to life. Not quite the voice I would have chosen for death though. (Ridcully would have been better!)

This week we watched Coraline, which I never did finish reading. Fun and creepy but mostly wonderful to watch.

ETA: And we finished the Alien quadrilogy with Alien: Resurrection. I saw it when it came out but but that was a while ago and I was surprised to see a few familiar names. Joss Whedon, for one, which gave it its own unique feel within the series. Brad Dourif ftw! And Gary Dourdan who has since become a better actor but was just as cute back then. It was enjoyable, there was ultra badass Ridley, best (as always) when somewhat vulnerable, as she was in the lab after finding her other selves. But had some issues with the story, particularly why and how the existence and nature of the alien seems to suddenly be common knowledge, in spite of "the Company's" efforts to keep it all under wraps. Convenient but not as believable or enjoyable as when, in all the previous films, everyone is all: "wtf is that thing?" *dies* In this case it's:"oh yes, that." *dies*

Which brings me to old movies. Apart from My Favorite Wife, a few other Cary Grant films include:

The Bachelor and the Bobby Soxer. Good clean fun I guess. Grant is amusing and it was interesting seeing Shirley Temple mostly grown up. But it was not as funny as some of his others, and the love interest wasn't very interesting.

To Catch a Theif. Older Grant! I'm a bit of an old man perv, I admit. This was mostly fun but honestly a little disappointing for Hitchcock! Not terribly exciting or unsettling in the least. Grace Kelly was lovely, though.

Charade. I've mentioned it a bit before but to be thorough... still my favorite Grant film so far. He's adorable in it and very funny, and he is perfectly matched by a very lively Audrey Hepburn. It will take a lot to top this one!

ETA: I forgot to mention because it was last weekend! Philadelphia Story. You know, I liked this one a lot. It was cute in many ways, mostly because of Jimmy Stewart! He was my favorite part (I will likely go on a Stewart kick soon!), and that drunken scene with Cary Grant is the best. :) But the story bugged me in some ways (as it did the Captain), and Cary, smoothe and lovely as ever, just wasn't as present as he is in some. I was slightly underwhelmed, especially given all the praise that film receives.
